Mitti Attar, also known as "The Scent of Soil" or "Petrichor Attar," is a traditional natural perfume extracted from baked clay (desi mitti) using ancient hydro-distillation techniques in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh — the perfume capital of India.

It captures the nostalgic aroma of the earth after the first monsoon rains, making it one of the most rare, poetic, and spiritual attars in Indian perfumery.

Traditional Making Process in Kannauj

1. Desi mitti (earth) is collected from specific areas near rivers or ponds.
2. It is sun-dried and then baked in earthen pots (matkas) to intensify the aroma.
3. The baked clay is placed in copper stills (Deg) with water.
4. Heated over firewood, the vapor travels into the Bhapka containing sandalwood oil.
5. This steam infuses the scent of soil into the sandalwood, drop by drop.
6. The process continues for up to 15 days, ensuring the attar captures the full depth of the earthy aroma.
